Extraction, isolation and structural identification of bioactive compounds from vegetables

Our main activities are the development, optimization and validation of innovative analytical methods aimed at the extraction, isolation, identification and quantification of natural compounds essentially from plants complex matrices. These activities, carried out in collaboration with research institutions and companies, have as primary aim the development of new formulations in the food and pharmaceutical sector. The research activity foresees: i) the optimization of both conventional solid-liquid extraction techniques such as maceration and percolation and of innovative technologies such as rapid dynamic solid-liquid extraction carried out using the Naviglio Extractor; ii) the isolation of the compounds of interest through the use of chromatographic techniques; iii) the structural identification of the main compounds through the use of spectroscopic (essentially NMR) and spectrometric (MS) methods; iv) the qualitative-quantitative analysis of the compounds of interest by using instrumental techniques such as GC-FID, HPLC-DAD, GC-MS and LC-MS.

Bioactive secondary metabolites produced by fungi

Fungi can be thought as biosynthetic factories detaining the recipe for a plethora of biologically active and structurally diverse natural products (secondary metabolites) to be used as a source of original structural information.  In this respect, our group is involved in the isolation, structural and stereostructural characterization of bioactive metabolites produced in vitro essentially by fungi from diverse habitat and/or associated to organisms. To achieve these goals, the most advanced analytical and structure elucidation techniques are employed, in addition to the classic procedures of isolating and identifying bioactive fungal compounds.

The study the fungal metabolomic profiles is related to the important biological roles of secondary metabolites as virulence factors, chemical defense agents and chemical signal for communication. Furthermore, the importance to exploit natural resources is related to their potential applications as chemotherapeutic agents, pesticides, antimicrobials were evaluated in collaboration with plant pathologists, physiologists, geneticists, microbiologists, toxicologists, entomologists. Moreover, skills have been developed on the qualitative and quantitative analysis of bioactive metabolites and on their derivatization for biological activity structure correlation studies.
